About the NSF MRI
MRI awards help organizations acquire or develop a multi-user research instrument that would be too costly for other NSF programs. Proposals are organized into tracks by request size.
Institutions may only submit a limited number of MRI proposals per competition, so most run an internal selection first.
- Project length
- Up to 3 years for acquisition, up to 5 for development
- Tracks
- Set by the size of the request
- Limits
- A limited number of proposals per institution per competition
- Cost sharing
- Rules depend on institution type and are set in the solicitation
Limits change between notices: the notice you apply to is what counts.
