Objective

Create a physics-based engineering model solution for shallow fuel jet spurts

Description

This topic seeks the development of a computationally efficient engineering-level model to predict the formation and characteristics of the "spurt" in fluid cavity created jets. The hydrodynamic spurt is the initial, often unsteady, ejection of material from the liner, preceding the formation of the main, stable jet. Current hydrocodes can model this phenomenon but are computationally expensive and ill-suited for rapid design iteration. This project will develop a validated, reduced-order model that accurately predicts spurt velocity, mass, and geometry as a function of liner material, geometry, and threat characteristics, enabling faster design and optimization of advanced warheads.

Phase I

Identify and analyze the key physical mechanisms governing spurt formation using existing literature and high-fidelity hydrocode simulation- Identify and analyze the key physical mechanisms governing spurt formation using existing literature and high-fidelity hydrocode simulations. Develop a preliminary analytical or semi-empirical framework for the model. Demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed model to predict spurt characteristics for a baseline test case. Develop a preliminary analytical or semi-empirical framework for the model. Demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed model to predict spurt characteristics for a baseline shaped charge design. The final report detailing the model's theoretical basis and demonstrating a proof-of-concept correlation with high-fidelity simulation data for at least one configuration.

Phase II

Develop the engineering model into a robust software prototype. Expand the model to account for a wider range of liner materials, geometries, and explosive types. Conduct extensive validation of the model against a matrix of existing or newly generated experimental data. A validated software tool capable of predicting spurt parameters with a defined level of accuracy. The tool should be significantly faster (orders of magnitude) than full hydrocode runs.

Phase III dual use applications

Harden the software for integration into the DoD's standard warhead design toolchains. Provide training and support to government and prime contractor engineering teams. Explore dual-use applications in commercial sectors such as high-speed metal forming, explosive welding, or industrial perforation.
